Architecture and Open Space Regeneration
Project type
Architecture and Open Space
Date
May 2023
Location
Oxford, UK
The Project
A regeneration project focused on the transformation of a car park in East Oxford. The development was guided by a curated brief centred on blocks, plots, and building types. This process involved creating a comprehensive design and access statement and a robust framework to deliver the development.
The Strategy
Following a site visit, an independent design was developed that prioritised urban integration and sustainability. Key factors included:
• Proximity to Green Space: Maximizing access to natural environments.
• Urban Drainage Features: Integrating sustainable water management systems.
• On-site Amenities: Providing essential services and facilities for the development.
Key Skills Acquired
• Independent Research: Developed the ability to find and analyse site-specific data, planning constraints, and urban contexts to inform design decisions.
• Hand Drawing & Drafting: Learnt architectural communication skills, using hand-drawn sketches and diagrams to explore spatial relationships and building typologies.
• Trial and Error: Embraced a "trial and error" methodology, refining the design through multiple iterations to find the most effective balance between blocks, plots, and open space.
Urban Analysis: Conducted site visits and translated observations into a formal Design and Access Statement and delivery framework.
